Artist Statement

as an artist, I am greatly inspired by social justice movements fighting for liberation, access, equality, and our human rights. I carry my activism into my artistry. I believe that art cannot be separated from who we are. I stress that it's imperative we always bring who we are into our dancing; our humanness is what makes art real and intentional. The intense emotions that are evoked in navigating our political and social climate are what I source to fuel my dancing. I am constantly chasing catharsis in performance and choreography; I crave the feeling of getting lost in the dance.

I invite my imagination to run wild in the creative process. Story-telling is what I cherish most in art. I bask in drama within performance and love immersing myself in the realms art offers bridges to. I am influenced by my adoration of film both narratively and visually. I am most guided by sound and energetically draw from powerful and deeply emotive music. I’ve experienced my voice and control being taken away from me, making me feel powerless, which has led me to revel in hard-hitting qualities as a regaining of my voice and self-worth. Dance is an affirmation of self for me. I find gratification through the play of texture and moving through extreme dynamic shifts that deliver stark contrast.

Through my work as an artist, I actualize my passions for activism, feminism, and self-advocacy. The fervor I feel while in motion keeps me hungry for more. Movement is an avenue of endless possibilities to people’s hearts and minds, and using this art to not only entertain but to push for change deems the craft of dance extremely powerful.
