Artist Statement
As an artist, I am greatly inspired and fueled by social justice movements fighting for equality and human rights. Activism for LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and racial equality is an important part of who I am. The feelings of frustration, hope, fear, and hurt I experience when advocating for an equitable and kinder world manifest in my movement and storytelling. When intense emotions overwhelm me, my movement allows me to make sense of what I am feeling. I feel movement and performance reach people on an emotional level in ways words are unable to.
My creative process knows no limitations, inviting any dance styles or choices. This freedom provides authenticity and increases my potential as an artist by creating more possibilities. My movement aesthetic epitomizes my identity and style. I relish experimenting with extreme changes in dynamics to emulate the feeling of anxiety I experience and the rush of several emotions all at once. My experience of feeling powerless and forced silence in a past environment has influenced me to gravitate towards strong and powerful qualities in my movement, expressing my regaining my voice and self-worth.
Through my work, I actualize my passions for activism, feminism, and self-advocacy in pieces of choreography. Choreography is an avenue of endless possibilities to people’s hearts and minds, and using this art to not only entertain but to push for change deems the craft of dance-making extremely powerful.
